Ryan Murphy: I’m a Weirdo!

“Halloween es todo para mí”, dice Ryan
Murphy
, el creador de American Horror
Story

Nunca tuve oportunidad.

Shadows

viendo?

“Halloween is everything to me,” says Ryan Murphy, creator of
American Horror Story
. “My mother actually went into labor with me on
Halloween. My father was dressed up as a werewolf, my mother was nine months
pregnant, and what happened was, a trick or treater came to the door, and he
did a growl and it scared our dog and the dog ran and my father went to catch
the dog and tripped and broke his ankle. And my mom in a panic had contractions
and had to drive herself to the hospital because my father couldn’t drive with
the broken ankle. And I grew up with this legend that I was so scared that my
contractions stopped and then they had to cut me out nine days later.”

But that was just the beginning of Murphy’s ‘unusual’
journey …

“I just think I’m a weirdo, I was a very weird kid. I was
pretty much raised by my grandmother, who was French and who was a great grand
dame in Indiana and was very theatrical, and she used to wake me up and make me
sit in silence and watch her put on her face before I would eat breakfast. So
that’s what I grew up with. I had not a chance. (laughs). I was the third of
four grandchildren, and I was the third of all four boys and I was very clearly
the only one who was interested in shoes, so I think she saw this little boy needed
some guidance.
She was a woman who missed her dream, she wanted to be a movie
star and my mother was a beauty queen, so I just always remember she was very theatrical
and she was French and my grandfather was Danish, he was actually the great, great
grandson of Hans Christen Anderson. So they were just these two oddballs and
she would wake me up and give me black tar coffee and then my grandfather would
have pig’s feet for breakfast every day.”

Could be that American Horror Story was born right there!

“She took me to a lot of horror movies I will say. I have
said this before, but she used to make me watch Dark Shadows and I was young so
I would be terrified and she would say, get out from behind that chair! Because
I would hide, and she would sit down and explain to me that it wasn’t real,
it’s fine, but she was just that kind of great lady, and it’s a big tragedy and
a pain in my life that never got to see me do what I do because she would have been so proud and she loved
storytelling and she loved musicals and she loved horror. And so, I love horror,
I love the stories, I want to do my version of the horror, which is more
psychological, it’s less grim, horror can be a release and I will say that Glee
and American Horror Story are the exact same muscle in my body, because they are
both, in the writing of it, they are both meant to make you feel something
instantly, unlike doing a drama where that can unfold a little bit, a musical
or a horror scene makes you either laugh, weep, or cry. Sometimes all at once.”

This season of American Horror Story, Coven, is a festival of bitchy witches. Are you watching?
